Get the Sleep You Deserve!

Thursday, November 12th, 2015

If you suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), you know restless nights, irritated spouses and day time fatigue are just a part of everyday life… but it doesn’t have to be this way.

At Dallas ENT Group, we understand the severe heath risks and daily discomfort that a person suffering from OSA experiences. That’s why our physicians utilize a safe and effective specialized treatment for people suffering from OSA called Temperature Controlled Radio Frequency Ablation (TCRFA) of the tongue. The RFA treatment is administered through a series of in-office treatments that work to tighten the muscles at the base of the tongue and prevent it from obstructing the airway during sleep. This treatment uses a FDA-Approved medical device and is covered by Medicare and United Heathcare.

Dallas ENT Group performs a highly advanced, minimally invasive radiofrequency procedure to treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea. The procedure takes place in a physician’s office over the course of six to eight treatments. Each treatment is two to five minutes long. All patients are able to drive themselves home or back to work immediately following the procedure. Radiofrequency Ablation is safe, effective and has shown to be a great alternative to CPAP.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Radiofrequency ablation directs small amounts of targeted energy to the base of the tongue in the back of the throat using a non-invasive device. Each treatment is performed in less than 1 hour; targeted energy delivery to the treatment area lasts just two to five minutes. Following the procedure, the treated area heals and the tissue is tightened and reduced in size. This tightening and reduction will directly prevent the tongue from blocking the airway while the patient is sleeping. The minimally invasive, outpatient procedure is performed with local anesthesia and is proven to be an effective treatment for patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).

WHY IS RADIOFREQUENCY THE BEST TREATMENT OPTION FOR OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA?
In contrast to other obstructive sleep apnea surgeries, the radiofrequency ablation procedure has a far shorter recovery time and significantly less post-operative pain. The recovery time for other OSA surgical procedures is typically several weeks with the accompaniment of narcotics, while the recovery time for Dallas ENT Group’s radiofrequency ablation procedure is only a few days. This procedure has shown consistent positive results as being a sleep disorder cure for obstructive sleep apnea.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF TREATMENT?
• Improve daytime sleepiness
• Improve concentration and memory
• Decrease risk for heart disease, heart failure, and stroke
• Decrease occurrence of erectile dysfunction
• Reduce the risk of car accidents

WHY AREN’T MORE PHYSICIANS PERFORMING THE RADIOFREQUENCY ABLATION PROCEDURE FOR OSA?
Radiofrequency ablation isn’t a new sleep apnea treatment. Up until recently, radiofrequency ablation was an invasive procedure performed solely in the operating room. The physicians at Dallas ENT Group have developed the medical protocols to conduct RFA in an office setting. This procedure was taken from the OR to the doctor’s office in order to increase patient comfort, reduce swelling and maximize results.

WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR RADIOFREQUENCY ABLATION?
If you show signs of sleep apnea you may be a candidate. Any individual that has been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea due to obstruction of the airway at the base of the tongue is a candidate for this procedure. A sleep study is required for all patients looking to diagnose their OSA. If you haven’t had a sleep study, Dallas ENT Group can refer you to take one. If you have a sleep study, and are looking to learn more about Dallas ENT Group’s radiofrequency tongue ablation treatment option, please contact our office and we will be glad to set up a consultation for you.

HOW LONG HAS THIS PROCEDURE BEEN PERFORMED?
Radiofrequency Tongue Ablation has been conducted for over 10 years. The physicians at Dallas ENT Group were the first in Texas to perform the RFA treatment. This procedure was taken from the OR to the doctor’s office in order to maximize patient comfort, reduce swelling and maximize results. A sleep study is required for all patients looking to evaluate Radiofrequency Ablation as a sleep apnea treatment option.
