Septoplasty
Correcting Nasal Obstruction & Improving Breathing
Septoplasty is a common surgical procedure performed to correct a deviated nasal septum, which can cause chronic nasal obstruction, snoring, recurrent sinus infections, and other issues. The nasal septum is the thin wall of bone and cartilage that divides the nasal passages. When this wall is crooked or off-center (deviated), it can block airflow, making it difficult to breathe through one or both nostrils.
A septal deviation can result from trauma, such as a broken nose, or it may be present from birth. While some people may have no symptoms, others may experience significant breathing problems and seek relief through surgery.
Symptoms of a Deviated Septum
A deviated septum can cause a range of symptoms, including:
-
Difficulty breathing through one or both nostrils
-
Chronic nasal congestion
-
Frequent sinus infections
-
Nosebleeds
-
Snoring or sleep disturbances
-
Headaches or facial pain
If you're experiencing these symptoms, a septoplasty may be the solution you need to improve nasal airflow and enhance your quality of life.
The Septoplasty Procedure: What to Expect
Septoplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia, allowing you to return home the same day. The steps of the procedure include:
-
Incision and Access: A small incision is made inside the nostril to access the nasal septum, avoiding any visible scarring.
-
Reshaping the Septum: The surgeon removes or reshapes the crooked sections of cartilage and bone that obstruct the airway, straightening the septum to improve airflow.
-
Turbinate Reduction (if needed): In some cases, swollen turbinates (structures that humidify and filter air) may also be reduced using coblation, a minimally invasive technique that reduces tissue swelling without removing vital structures.
-
Sutures and Splints: After the septum is straightened, dissolvable sutures are placed inside the nose. Small plastic splints may also be inserted on either side of the septum to keep it in position while it heals. These splints are typically removed after about a week.
If external nasal issues, such as a crooked nose, are also present, a rhinoplasty can be performed in conjunction with septoplasty to improve both function and appearance.
Recovery and Postoperative Care
After your septoplasty, you'll be given instructions to ensure a smooth recovery:
-
Rest: Patients typically return home the same day and should rest for several days following the procedure.
-
Medication: Antibiotics and pain medications may be prescribed to manage discomfort and prevent infection.
-
Splint Removal: If splints were placed during surgery, they are usually removed about a week later.
-
Follow-up Appointments: A follow-up visit will ensure proper healing of the septum.
Patients are generally able to resume normal activities within 1-2 weeks, though complete healing can take several weeks. It's essential to avoid strenuous activity or heavy lifting during recovery to prevent complications.
Benefits of Septoplasty
-
Improved Breathing: Restores normal airflow through both nostrils, significantly improving breathing.
-
Reduced Congestion: Provides relief from chronic nasal congestion and frequent sinus infections.
-
Better Sleep: Many patients experience improved sleep and a reduction in snoring after surgery.
-
No Visible Scars: Because the incision is made inside the nose, there are no visible scars.
