Sinus Surgery

Sinus surgery is a specialized procedure aimed at relieving chronic inflammation, infection, and blockages in the sinus cavities. If you’ve been struggling with persistent sinus issues that haven't responded to medication, surgery may be the most effective option. At Dallas ENT Group, our expert surgeons have performed over 5,000 successful endoscopic sinus cases, including balloon sinuplasty, ensuring a high level of experience and care.

What Is Chronic Sinusitis?

Chronic sinusitis, also called chronic rhinosinusitis, occurs when the sinuses are persistently inflamed or blocked. This prevents mucus from draining properly, causing discomfort and infection. While some cases are due to bacterial infections, many cases result from ongoing inflammation or nasal tissue swelling, which may lead to the development of nasal polyps—benign growths that further block the sinuses.

Common Symptoms of Chronic Sinusitis

  • Difficulty breathing through the nose

  • Facial pressure or pain

  • Headaches

  • Dental pain

  • Reduced sense of smell and taste

  • Chronic cough or pulmonary issues

  • Mucus drainage that is yellow or green in color

If your sinus symptoms persist for 8 weeks or longer and fail to improve with antibiotics or steroids, you may be suffering from chronic sinusitis. Untreated chronic sinus issues can lead to complications such as respiratory infections, fatigue, and even sleep disturbances due to nasal congestion.

Sinus Surgery Evaluation at Dallas ENT Group

A thorough evaluation is crucial to determine if sinus surgery is necessary. At Dallas ENT Group, our sinus surgeons use the latest tools and techniques to carefully assess each patient. During your evaluation, the surgeon will:

  1. Medical History and Symptom Review: A detailed conversation about your sinus symptoms, past treatments, and how long the condition has been ongoing.

  2. Endoscopic Examination: A lighted endoscope is used to inspect the nasal passages and sinus openings. This provides a clear view of any blockages, polyps, or inflammation.

  3. CT Scan: In many cases, a CT scan is ordered to obtain a detailed image of the sinus structures. At Dallas ENT Group, CT scans are often available the same day as your consultation, allowing for prompt and accurate diagnosis.

Types of Sinus Surgery We Offer

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery

Endoscopic sinus surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that does not require external incisions. Surgeons use a small, lighted tube called an endoscope to access the sinuses and remove blockages, such as polyps or thickened tissue, which contribute to the obstruction. This technique minimizes tissue damage and reduces recovery time.

  • Image-Guided Technology: At Dallas ENT Group, we utilize advanced image-guided technology (BrainLAB) during surgery, allowing for unparalleled precision. This system reduces the risk of complications and ensures safe, effective tissue removal.

Balloon Sinuplasty

For patients with less extensive sinus blockages, balloon sinuplasty is a less invasive option. This procedure involves inserting a small balloon into the blocked sinus, inflating it to widen the sinus passage, and restoring proper drainage. Balloon sinuplasty is typically performed as an outpatient procedure and offers a faster recovery than traditional sinus surgery.

What to Expect Before, During, and After Sinus Surgery

Pre-Surgery Preparation

Before surgery, your ENT specialist will give you specific instructions to follow, such as discontinuing certain medications. It’s also important to prepare for a short recovery period at home following the procedure.

During the Procedure

Sinus surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia. For endoscopic sinus surgery, a small endoscope and instruments are inserted through the nostrils to clear blockages and restore normal sinus function. The use of image-guided systems ensures maximum accuracy, reducing the risk of complications such as spinal fluid leaks or vision problems.

After the Procedure

  • Post-Surgery Care: After surgery, patients may experience some nasal congestion and mild discomfort. Most patients can go home the same day but will need to attend follow-up visits to monitor healing.

  • Follow-Up Visits: About 2-3 weeks after the procedure, your surgeon will perform a follow-up endoscopic examination to assess healing. Additional visits may be required to remove scar tissue or crusting that can occur as part of the natural healing process.

Benefits of Sinus Surgery

  • Improved breathing through the nose

  • Relief from facial pain and headaches

  • Enhanced sense of smell and taste

  • Fewer sinus infections and reduced need for antibiotics

  • Better sleep and overall quality of life
