Tonsils and Adenoids

Tonsils and adenoids play a key role in the immune system, particularly during early childhood. However, in some cases, these tissues can become problematic, leading to chronic infections, airway obstruction, and other health concerns. At Dallas ENT Group, we specialize in diagnosing and treating tonsil and adenoid conditions for both children and adults.

What Are Tonsils and Adenoids?

Tonsils are two oval-shaped masses located at the back of the throat, while adenoids are situated higher up, behind the nose. Both are part of the lymphatic system and help fight infections in young children. However, as the immune system matures, the role of the tonsils and adenoids diminishes, and they may become more of a hindrance than a benefit for some individuals.

Common Tonsil and Adenoid Problems

Recurrent Infections

Chronic or recurrent tonsillitis, often caused by bacterial or viral infections, can lead to persistent sore throats, difficulty swallowing, and swollen lymph nodes.

Airway Obstruction & Sleep Disorders

Enlarged tonsils and adenoids can obstruct the airway, leading to mouth breathing, snoring, and sleep-disordered breathing, which can cause poor sleep quality, daytime fatigue, and concentration difficulties.

Tonsil Stones (Tonsilloliths)

In adults, debris and bacteria can accumulate in the tonsillar crypts, leading to bad breath, throat discomfort, and occasional infections.

When is Tonsillectomy or Adenoidectomy Recommended?

A tonsillectomy (removal of the tonsils) or adenoidectomy (removal of the adenoids) may be recommended in the following cases:

  • Frequent tonsillitis (4-5 infections per year despite treatment)

  • Obstructive sleep apnea or persistent snoring

  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing due to enlarged tonsils

  • Chronic sore throat and tonsil-related halitosis (bad breath)

Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy: What to Expect

Evaluation & Consultation

Our ENT specialists will conduct a thorough evaluation, including medical history, physical examination, and, if necessary, additional tests to determine the best course of treatment.

Surgical Procedure

Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy are commonly performed outpatient procedures, typically completed in under 30 minutes under general anesthesia. In children, adenoidectomy is often done alongside tonsillectomy to improve breathing and reduce infections.

Recovery & Postoperative Care

  • Most children recover within 7-10 days; adults may experience a slightly longer recovery period.

  • Patients may experience throat pain, mild bleeding, and temporary changes in voice or swallowing.

  • Postoperative care includes adequate hydration, soft foods, and prescribed pain management.

Tonsillectomy in Adults

While tonsillectomies are more common in children, adults can also benefit from the procedure, particularly if they suffer from chronic tonsillitis, persistent throat discomfort, or tonsil stones. Recovery in adults may take longer, but the benefits—such as improved breathing, fewer infections, and reduced throat irritation—often outweigh the temporary discomfort.
