At Dallas ENT Group, our pediatric specialists are dedicated to diagnosing and treating airway and breathing issues in children of all ages. From noisy breathing in neonates to more serious airway obstructions, our team provides expert care tailored to the needs of young patients.
Understanding Pediatric Airway Issues
Pediatric airway conditions can range from mild to severe. Noisy breathing, or stridor, is common in infants, but it can sometimes indicate a more serious underlying issue. Our team thoroughly evaluates each child’s airway to determine whether it is functioning properly, and if not, identifies whether the problem is in the upper or lower airway.

During your child’s initial consultation, our specialists will conduct a detailed assessment of their medical history and symptoms. This is followed by a physical examination, which may include the use of a fiber optic scope to visually inspect the airway above the vocal cords for any abnormalities. Our goal is to identify the cause of the airway noise and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.
Common Pediatric Airway Conditions
-
Laryngomalacia: This is one of the most common causes of noisy breathing in infants. It occurs when the cartilage of the epiglottis is soft and floppy, causing the airway to collapse during inspiration. Laryngomalacia typically resolves on its own by the time the child is 12 months old, often with minimal intervention other than managing any reflux.
-
Subglottic Hemangioma: This condition involves the abnormal growth of blood vessels just below the vocal cords. It can cause respiratory distress and noisy breathing in infants, particularly those between 1 and 3 months old. Early evaluation and intervention can help manage symptoms and prevent complications.
Advanced Airway Evaluation
For children with more complex airway conditions, our specialists may recommend a laryngoscopy and bronchoscopy procedure. This is a minimally invasive examination performed under anesthesia, using a lighted scope to assess the airway from the vocal cords down to the trachea and bronchi. This procedure is crucial for identifying any structural issues or abnormalities that may be affecting your child’s breathing.
